In response to the numerous crimes concerning youth, Open Arms, Inc. will be showing the Kalief Browder Series over the next few weeks. Youth, up to age 20, are invited to come eat, watch the documentary, and discuss issues with staff, in hopes to have open and inspiring dialogue on youth involved in criminal behaviors and criminal justice reform. Kalief Browder was an African American man who was arrested at the age of 16 for allegedly stealing a backpack. He was imprisoned for three years on Rikers Island without trial and spent most of this time in solitary confinement. Two years after his release, Browder died by suicide. His case is cited by activists who call for the reform of the New York City criminal justice system.
