Nature of Work: Reporting directly to the Office of the President, the Office of Legal Affairs provides legal advice and counseling to the University through its administrators, faculty, and staff in the course of their duties on behalf of the University. In addition to providing legal counseling to the University, other areas of responsibility for the Office of Legal Affairs include policy interpretation and advice, administration of the University's grievance and dispute resolution procedures, contract review, coordination of records requests, and -- in conjunction with the Attorney General -- management of actual or threatened litigation in which the University is involved. The Office of Legal Affairs is also available to provide training on legal issues applicable to units of the University.

Minimum Qualifications: 
*A law degree from an ABA-accredited law school; 
*Licensed and in good standing with the Georgia State Bar or the ability to be licensed within one year of appointment start date; 
*Minimum of 2 years of related professional legal experience (subject to waiver for exceptionally relevant experience) 
*Exceptional written, interpersonal, organizational, and verbal communication skills and the highest level of attention to detail; 
*Self-motivated and demonstrated ability to take initiative and to multi-task, adapt to changing priorities and meet deadlines; 
*Creativity, patience, calm demeanor under pressure, and willingness to learn new areas of the law; 
*Demonstrated ability to work independently and perform duties with a high level of professionalism, follow-through, flexibility, discretion, judgment, accuracy, diplomacy and tact; 
*Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population, to cultivate an inclusive, diverse and welcoming environment, and to treat all people equitably in a culturally competent manner. 

Preferred Qualifications: 
*2 - 5 years of related professional legal experience; and 
*Experience practicing higher education law.  
Testing Requirements:  
Illustrative Examples of Work: Under the general direction and supervision of the Chief Legal Affairs Officer, the Assistant Counsel is responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice and services to the University, with primary responsibility contract and policy review, records requests, and the development and presentation of relevant training material. 

Provide counsel and legal services to the University on a wide range of legal issues; research, review and perform analysis of laws and regulations as they relate to policy and procedures and the education of the University community. 

Coordinate the response and review of records requests pursuant Georgia's Open Record Act, lawfully issued subpoenas, court orders, and various other legal requests. 

Prepare, review and negotiate contracts involving leases, licenses, purchases, insurance, employment, research and other matters. 

Provide training and educational programming for faculty, staff, administrators, and students to support institutional outcomes and compliance with University policy and state and federal laws and regulations. 

Assist in the preparation of responses to complaints and inquiries filed with or by federal and state agencies. 

Assist the Chief Legal Affairs Officer in handling a wide range of legal and other issues. 

Perform other job-related duties as required.
